Please don’t forget about our annual SJES Food Drive to support Jefferson County Community Ministries! Our last day to collect is this Thursday. The class that brings in the most items will get an extra recess! Last year, we donated over 1,000 pounds of food. Let’s see if we can top that this year!

It was 4th grade’s turn to visit Cool Spring Preserve and to conduct their watershed lessons together this week. It was a beautiful day and a fantastic opportunity to learn more about our watershed and the impact we have on the waterways throughout our area. They planted a tree to commemorate the visit and to positively impact the environment. As always, we appreciate Cool Spring Preserve for their generosity and partnership. 🌎🍃🌳

We love our relationship with Cool Spring Nature Preserve! Our kindergarten classes visited them this week and had so much fun investigating and exploring the beauty of the natural world. It’s such a valuable experience, to expand beyond the four walls of a classroom and bring the outdoors to our students.

As part of our relationship with our community, South Jefferson is going to collect food and other important items for Jefferson County’s Community Ministries food pantry. We will be working with Cub Scout Troop 420 to collect as many items as possible. You may begin to send in items on Monday, March 31st.
Items that are needed:
o Canned foods (soup, vegetables, fish, chicken, fruit, beans, stew, etc.) Better to have cans that do NOT require a can opener---cans with “pop tops”
o Peanut butter and jelly
o Syrup, boxed Pancake mix
o Pasta, spaghetti sauce (plastic bottles preferred)
o Rice
o Applesauce
o Shelf stable milk
o Granola bars, cereal bars, cereal
o Boxed foods (meals in a box, mac & cheese,
o Toiletries/hygiene products (toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc)
o Baby items (diapers, wipes)
o Pet food

It has just come to my attention that the menu online is a bit confusing.... We will work to correct that error, but, in the meantime, lunch for tomorrow (Thursday, March 13th) is "Breakfast for Lunch" and Friday (March 14th) is Pepperoni Pizza.
Our annual Book Character parade was an awesome experience, as always! The creativity and participation was “one for the books” (see what I did there? 😉😂)

Congratulations to fourth grader, Stella Lopez, for her Positive Office Referral! Stella was nominated by her teacher, Ms. Brooks, for pushing through her frustrations with Math. Instead of giving up, Stella pushed through, challenging herself to ask questions, take her time and practice, practice, practice. We are proud of you, Stella. You should be very proud of yourself, as well! 🥳
See this awesome bunch of first graders? They decided to gather litter from our walking trail and clean up our space so that we could all enjoy the beauty of nature. Mrs. Shearer wanted to celebrate their kindness with a Positive Office Referral and I couldn’t agree more! Our future is bright, with these young people leading with their hearts. Thank you! 🌎
Today’s Read Across America event was “Buddying Up to Reading”. Our younger students are paired with older students to share their reading or to be read to by the older reading buddy. It’s a beautiful thing to watch and our students love it.
Third grader, Griffin Carroll, was nominated by his teacher, Mrs. Hipp, for a Positive Office Referral. Griffin was finished his work early and decided to work on additional school work while his fellow classsmates finished the assignment. Griffin could have easily chose a fun, non-academic activity, but instead chose to push himself to do even more. What an impressive decision, Griffin! Thank you for being an exceptional role model for others!

We kicked off our Read Across America week with a “reading is cozy” theme today. We wore our pajamas and brought a stuffy to school to be our reading buddy. Members of the Washington High School Key Club stopped by to read to classes and we had many opportunities to read with our friends. It was a great day to read our favorite books!
Congratulations to Caleb Cotter, who was nominated for a Positive Office Referral from his teacher. Mrs. Mangum said that Caleb “comes to school with enthusiasm, adding to class discussions and challenging himself each day”. Impressive, Caleb! Thank you for being a positive role model for other students at SJES!
