JCS Communities: All JCS schools have been released from their SECURE or LOCKDOWN. WMS families will be picking their students up at Sam Micahels Park today. We ask that you follow your regular pickup practice, as not to overwhelm our schools or roads as law enforcement continue their work..
We wanted to take this time to inform the parents of T.A. Lowery about the following:
We would like to share important information about head lice to help keep our school community healthy, informed, and prepared. Head lice are common among school-age children and can affect anyone, regardless of hygiene or home environment. They do not spread disease and are not considered a health hazard.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):https://www.cdc.gov/lice
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):https://publications.aap.org
HealthyChildren.org: https://www.healthychildren.org
What Are Head Lice?
Head lice are very small insects that live on the scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. They are usually found behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. The most common symptom is itching, though symptoms may not appear for several weeks after infestation.
How Head Lice Spread
Headlicespread primarily through direct head-to-head contact. They cannot hop or fly. Sharing personal items such as hats, brushes, or pillows can sometimes contribute to the spread, though this is less common.
School Attendance
Both the CDC and the AAP advise that students do not need to be sent home early ifliceare found. Students may remain in school for the day, begin treatment at home, and return once treatment has started. “No-nit” policies—requiring all eggs to be removed before returning—are discouraged because they are not effective and may unnecessarily keep students out of school.
What Parents Should Do - General Guidelines from the CDC
Check your child’s hair regularly—especially behind the ears and at the base of the neck—for lice or nits (eggs).
If you find live lice or nits close to the scalp, examine all household members every 2–3 days and treat anyone with evidence of active infestation.
Begin treatment with an FDA-approved over-the-counter or prescription lice treatment and follow all instructions exactly. Some treatments require retreatment 7–9 days later, depending on the product used.
After treatment, continue to comb out remaining lice and nits every 2–3 days for 2–3 weeks.
Wash bedding, clothing, and towels used in the two days before treatment in hot water and dry on high heat. Items that cannot be washed may be sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks.
Avoid unnecessary household cleaning—vacuuming floors and furniture is sufficient. Lice cannot survive long away from the scalp.
Reducing Stigma
The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that head lice can be emotionally stressful for families, but are common and manageable. They are not a sign of uncleanliness, and children should not feel embarrassed or isolated.
When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider
If you have difficulty eliminating lice, if over-the-counter products seem ineffective, or if you have concerns about which treatment is best for your child, please contact your pediatrician for guidance.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our school a supportive and healthy environment for all students. If you have any questions, please reach out to your school nurse or administration team.
Thank you,
TALES Admin

JCS Families,
Jefferson County Schools will operate on a modified Non-Traditional Instruction Day (NTID) on Monday, March 16. All evening activities are canceled.
This decision was made after monitoring the weather throughout the weekend and consulting with the National Weather Service Charleston, WV, office this evening. Forecasted severe storms, including high winds up to 80 mph, heavy rain, and the potential for tornadoes, are creating too much uncertainty to plan for either an early or standard dismissal tomorrow afternoon. Keeping students at home helps us avoid putting them or our staff in harm's way.
What This Means for Your Student:
- Students will not report to school tomorrow and will complete their learning from home.
- K–5 students will find assignments and information posted in Rooms, as we did not send devices home for Canvas access.
- 6–12 students should follow the normal NTID process and connect with their teachers through their usual platforms.
- Teachers and staff will be available to support students from 9:15 am – 12:00 pm.
All LSIC meetings scheduled for tomorrow are cancelled and will be rescheduled. Math Field Day has been postponed to Wednesday, March 18.
Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we work to keep everyone safe.
